- Rotary Club of Brockville has partnered with local organization
Canadian Aid for Chernobyl since 1996.
- Since 1999, CAC and Brockville Rotary have collected, shipped
and distributed 79 – 40’ containers of urgently needed
medicines, medical supplies, food, laundry soap, clothing, school
supplies, a fully equipped ambulance and most recently a fully equipped
fire truck. Exceeding $24 million in value.
- This humanitarian effort has grown from one orphanage in 1998,
to now providing aid to 29 orphanages, 11 hospitals, 3 homes for
the aged 11 daycares/kindergartens, 14 schools, invalid children
and juvenile diabetics: benefiting 5800 children and several thousand
families in five provinces.
- Rotary Clubs of Brockville and Palgrave have helped to provide,
laundry equipment to several hospitals and orphanages and washrooms,
hot water and showers in the Chausy Orphanage.
- All funding has been done through the private sector including:
individuals, organizations, service clubs. No government support.
- Several Clubs within our district have generously supported this
effort: Chesterville, Smiths falls, Arnprior, Eganville, Huntington,
Gouverneur, Watertown, Perth, Tremblant, Hawkesbury, Clayton, West

(Toronto)
- Rotarians Dave Shaw and Brian U’Ren have just recently returned
from the Republic of Belarus, personally overseeing the customs clearance
and the distribution of all aid from the March/April mission. 16
containers, valued at 2.4 million dollars and a fire truck were all
successfully distributed. Included was food for 700 families, most
were families on social assistance (single moms with multiple children,
and families with invalid children). This effort is sponsored by
many of our own club members!
- The Rotary Club of Brockville has established a relationship with
an Organization of Families with Invalid Children in the District
of Chausy. 94 invalid children are registered and are in desperate
need of many basic items. Our club sponsored 1.5 containers. Providing
wheelchairs, crutches, hygiene products, laundry soap and 94 – 65lb
food boxes. Also, the Rotary Club of Brockville provided a fund for
medical assessments and corrective surgeries, eyeglasses etc. This
is a first for such a program
- This was all made available because of the generous support from
our district!
- In a single six-month period, our club raised $13,000 to guarantee
the safe distribution of three forty-foot containers filled with
donations to an orphanage and a hospital in the Chausy region. The
total value of the aid delivered exceeded an amazing $750,000. Co-ordinated
by club member Dave Shaw, he co-ordinated the largest shipment ever
of humanitarian aid from Canada to Belarus government donations
included. The final inventory included several hundred bottles of
cough syrup, 30,000 dental drill bits, 600 boxes of laundry detergent
and 3,000 baby bottles donated by such companies as Procter & Gamble,
Playtex and Shorewood Packaging.
